The tokenization of real-world assets has spent years promising to reshape global finance from the margins. Now one of the most consequential moves in that campaign has arrived: the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation is bringing U.S. Treasuries custodied by its subsidiary DTC onchain through the Canton Network, touching a market that runs to $6 trillion in assets. This is not a pilot program announced at a conference. This is post-trade infrastructure — the plumbing that settles virtually every securities transaction in the United States — taking a deliberate step onto a public blockchain rail.
The significance of DTC-custodied Treasuries moving onchain cannot be overstated for anyone tracking the real-world asset, or RWA, sector. DTC, as the depository arm of the DTCC, holds legal title to the vast majority of U.S. securities on behalf of broker-dealers and banks. When DTC moves, it does not represent a fintech experiment running parallel to the traditional system — it is the traditional system extending itself into a new settlement layer. Lighter's bet is that it can carve out territory in that same design space — fully onchain limit-order-book trading — while offering a fee profile that justifies a higher valuation multiple. Whether that multiple holds will depend on whether Lighter can attract and sustain the trading volume that transforms a fee model on paper into a revenue engine in practice.
These two stories — the DTCC's Canton deployment and Lighter's LIT launch — occupy very different segments of the digital-asset market, but they share an underlying thesis: onchain infrastructure is ready for serious economic weight.
