The BIS study concludes that widely used crypto metrics can systematically obscure real economic activity rather than illuminate it. That finding carries weight precisely because it comes from the BIS — the so-called central bank of central banks, an institution whose research shapes how monetary authorities worldwide interpret emerging financial infrastructure. When Basel raises a red flag about data quality, the global regulatory and institutional investment community takes notice.

The core issue is not simply that the numbers are wrong in some marginal, rounding-error sense.
